In my BA project I created a new visual identity for Esbjerg Kunstmuseum [Esbjerg Art Museum]. The new identity were inspired by one the basic principles of viewing art; that you need to put in your own references and views in order to get an output – you can only get something out of it, if you are willing to put something into it.
Another source of inspiration were their unique and continued approach to experiment with art in crossfields with fx. music or science. I used the definition of the cross [two intersecting lines] to create a grid that would be the foundation of the whole identity. Troughout the project I worked with the value sentence/design mantra – It's all in your mind
I wanted the logo to be an acronym using the letters E and K. But these letters does not look very harmonic together, because of the vertical and horizontal lines of the E and the diagonal lines of the K.
In fact, the only common feature of these two letters is the stem, which became the foundation for bringing harmony to the new acronym.
GRID:
The grid were inspired by their experimental and continues way of working with art in crossfields.
Over the last decade the museum have worked with putting art up against other fields of work, and they continue envolving this.
Definition of a Cross: Two intersecting lines
WEBSITE:
The old website were very confusing and to get to the current exhibitions, you needed to do several clicks in order to find it. The new website is clean and has no distracting or misleading elements.
The website were, of course, made responsive so it always adapts to the screen size.
TYPOGRAPHY:
Inspired by the fact that no piece of art is finished when viewing it, some letters in the headlines were cut in a 45 degree angle, to reflect this incompleteness.
This also activates your mind as you automatically fills in the 'empty gaps' – just like you need to to with the art.
PATTERN:
The graphical pattern creates images in an abstract form and activates the viewers mind for meeting the art.
The pattern can be used in different variations and density.
WAYFINDING:
The museum is arranged so that you can explore the museum's exhibitions in the order you want.
Therefore they needed new wayfinding, that were not too dictating in the visual language.
A huge thanks to Birgitte Ørum and the rest of the staff at Esbjerg Kunstmuseum for being helpful and open minded towards my BA project. Also a huge thanks to René Christoffer for superb supervision during the project
